The SMART Recovery Australia team has participated in and attended several key drug and alcohol forums and conferences across Australia over recent months. Here’s a snapshot of some of the events we have been a part of.
SMART Recovery Australia closed 2014 with oral and poster presentations at the following conferences / forums:
National Training Coordinator Josette Freeman, Support Officer Karen Gold and Executive Director Ryan McGlaughlin presented ‘SMART is Smart’ at The Mental Health Services Conference (TheMHS), Perth. Held during late August, The TheMHS Conference is the largest national mental health conference in Australia.
In September, Josette and Ryan participated on the international panel discussion at the SMART Recovery Annual Conference / 20th Anniversary celebration at the headquarters of ‘National Geographic’ in Washington D.C.
Area Coordinator (SA, TAS, VIC) David Hunt presented ‘SMART Recovery Australia: Innovations for a new Era In Mutual-Aid in Addictions’ as a plenary speaker at SANDAS (South Australia Network of Drug and Alcohol Services) Annual Conference.
David had a poster displayed titled, ‘SMART Recovery Australia: Innovations for a new Era In Mutual-Aid in Addictions’ at the Australasian Professional Society on Alcohol & other Drugs Conference in Adelaide.
Josette presented to CMHDARN (Community Mental Health Drug & Alcohol Research Network) on the SMART Recovery programme, emphasising the importance of having culturally appropriate groups for aboriginal people.
2015 has started off just as busy for the team, with National Program Coordinator Josette Freeman presenting, ‘SMART Partnerships’ at the 7th Australasian Drug & Alcohol Strategy Conference in Brisbane last month.
David Hunt gave an oral presentation at the VAADA (Victoria’s peak body for AOD) conference in February: ‘SMART Recovery Australia: Innovations towards a new era in Mutual-Aid’, which was well attended and received.
