SMART Inside Out Program
Supportive positive change and rehabilitation through evidence-based SMART Recovery tools
What is SMART Inside Out?
SMART Inside Out is an adaptation of the SMART Recovery program designed for people in correctional and post-release settings. It offers a structured, supportive approach that helps participants reflect on their thinking, take responsibility for their choices, and prepare for life beyond custody.
Using evidence-based Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) tools, Inside Out supports individuals to understand the links between thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, and to build the skills needed for positive, lasting change.
Key ideas:
- Inside Out is a version of SMART Recovery tailored for correctional and post-release settings.
- It helps participants identify and change unhelpful thinking patterns and behaviours linked to offending.
- The program uses evidence-based Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) techniques to develop healthier, more constructive ways of thinking and coping.
- Inside Out supports participants to build life skills for successful community reintegration and long-term wellbeing

Key learning areas
SMART Inside Out focuses on practical skills and self-reflection. Each module helps participants understand their thinking, manage emotions, and build tools for positive change.
- Building problem-solving, planning, and emotional regulation skills to support reintegration and long-term wellbeing.
- Fostering a respectful, safe space that acknowledges trauma’s impact without retraumatisation, supporting healing and accountability.
- Practising strategies to pause and choose better responses in high-risk or emotionally charged situations.
- Learning to recognise and manage emotions such as anger, stress, and depression using evidence-based CBT tools.
- Identifying unhelpful thought patterns — like entitlement, impulsivity, or power orientation — that can lead to poor decisions and reoffending.

Why it works?
- Built on the proven effectiveness of CBT in reducing reoffending and supporting behavioural change
