SMART Recovery Australia (SRAU) is a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee and a registered charity with the Australian Charities and not-for-profits Commission (ACNC). SMART Recovery Australia provides evidence-based tools to support individuals and their families and friends to manage behaviours of concern and improve their wellbeing. Our mission is to build a supportive community where people can develop the skills and confidence to manage their addictive behaviours and lead fulfilling lives.

SMART Recovery Australia delivers 450+ meetings nationally in partnership with over 80 member organisations. SMART Recovery trains over 800 facilitators yearly to deliver SMART meetings in their community. SMART Recovery Australia is a proud founding affiliate of SMART Recovery International which has successfully grown SMART Recovery to 36 countries globally.

By the year 2028, SMART will be known as the leading peer-led recovery movement in Australia and Aotearoa NZ. The goal is to make peer support not only accessible but also empowering and recognisable across diverse communities, thereby fostering a culture of acceptance and support.

Committee Overview

The Audit and Risk Committee (ARC) is a sub-committee of the Board of SMART Recovery Australia (SRAU). The ARC’s role is advisory rather than supervisory in nature. The SRAU Board holds responsibility for oversight of SRAU’s corporate governance, financial controls and sustainability. The ARC reports to the Board via the ARC Chair. The ARC is dedicated to overseeing and assisting with SRAU’s corporate governance responsibilities, financial management, and auditing processes. It ensures that SRAU implements effective processes to identify and manage risks. Additionally, the ARC advises the Board on SRAU’s remuneration principles, policies, and practices, offering strategic insights into market trends and best practices in remuneration. ARC members are appointed by the SRAU Board of Directors to assist the board in fulfilling its corporate governance and oversight responsibilities in relation to corporate reporting processes, including the financial reporting process, risk management and internal control, external audit, internal audit and compliance (including the code of conduct). 

Role Overview

As an ARC Member, your expertise will play a pivotal role in overseeing and advising on SRAU’s corporate governance responsibilities, financial management, and auditing processes, guiding the strategic direction of SMART Recovery Australia.

Responsibilities*:

● Actively participate in 4-5 online Committee meetings per year for an initial term of 2 years**
● Provide professional insights to help shape SRAU’s corporate governance responsibilities, financial management, and auditing processes, guiding the strategic direction of SMART Recovery Australia
● Contribute to planning and organisational development as required
● Assist in ensuring SRAU’s financial health and legal compliance
● Support the development and implementation of technology solutions to enhance service delivery.

Requirements:

● Expertise in accounting, audit, risk management, legal, and/or technology
● Passion for supporting individuals in recovery and promoting health, mental health and wellbeing
● Previous experience in governance or community leadership is desirable but not essential
● Commitment to attending 4-5 online Committee meetings per year for an initial term of 2 years* and contributing to discussions and decision-making processes*

* Please note this is a Volunteer (Unpaid) Position
** Once appointed, resignation during the term should be made in writing to the ARC Chair
