One Step At A Time: SMART Recovery's Role In Mental Health Recovery

Mental health recovery is a vital path towards a fulfilling life. It's a journey of managing emotions, thoughts, and behaviours to achieve overall wellbeing. While often associated with conditions like anxiety or depression, mental health can also be impacted by a wide range of behaviours of concern.

If you are experiencing mental health challenges, it may be comforting to know that you're not alone.

At SMART Recovery Australia, we offer supportive and empowering meetings for anyone seeking to address these challenges. No matter where you are in your mental health recovery journey, keep reading to find out how you can access support.

Support Beyond Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD)

SMART Recovery Australia offers SMART meetings that go beyond Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) dependence.

Research shows a significant and complex interplay between mental health and various behaviours of concern. According to The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, there is a correlation between substance use and domestic violence.

The same report shows that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women are particularly overrepresented in these statistics, highlighting the need for inclusive and culturally sensitive support. With that being said, how can these individuals build resilience through their mental health recovery?

Evidence-Based Mental Health Recovery Support

At SMART Recovery Australia, our Peer Support-led SMART meetings empower individuals with the tools and strategies to manage any behaviour of concern, regardless of the cause.

Through these meetings, it is encouraged that individuals explore their actions, set goals, share ideas and discuss solutions.

The heart of mental health recovery and addressing potentially underlying problematic behaviours contributing to mental health concerns is creating an environment where everyone feels understood and supported.

Creating A Safe Space

The first step in your mental health recovery journey can sometimes feel like the hardest part, however, it’s one of the most important.

We prioritise a safe, non-judgmental environment in our SMART meetings, where you don’t need to disclose your identity or the specific behaviour you're addressing.

SMART Recovery’s 4-Step Program also focuses on building self-reliance and improving one’s mental health and is a science-based alternative to 12-step programs.

Flexible options are available to meet your needs, including the option of online and in-person meetings available across Australia, making participation convenient, accessible and anonymity an option.

Additionally, our materials and resources are free and readily available online.

We believe in fostering a supportive community where everyone feels comfortable sharing their experiences and learning from others. If you’re ready to make the first step, follow the link to book your first SMART meeting

You can also find a meeting for women and men only, LGBTIQ+ community members, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander only meetings. It is support by your your community for the community.
