SMART RECOVERY APPOINTS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

November 21 2013: Not for profit organisation SMART Recovery, whose programs focus on providing support to tackle the underlying issues surrounding addictions, has announced the appointment of Ryan McGlaughlin as Executive Director.
Ryan will play a pivotal role within the organisation focusing on program development, cultivating long-term strategies to guide the organisation and generate fundraising activities to support existing annual goals in program operations.
“Mr McGlaughlins extensive experience and broad achievements in the not for profit sector showcase his expertise in management and development,” said SMART Recovery Chairman Tony Wales.
Mr McGlaughlin has over 20 years experience in community development, fundraising, community management and leadership roles, including 13 years in executive roles.
His previous work includes the transformation of Suicide Prevention Australia from a small organisation under threat into a respected national peak body. He was also the individual who lead People Living with HIV/AIDS NSW (now Positive Life) into the largest state-based organisation.
Mr McGlaughlin said his experience and exposure to communities, businesses and government bodies will allow him to have a significant impact on delivering better outcomes within the organisation.
SMART Recovery is a not for profit organisation who aims to help people overcome addictions in its many forms whether it be alcohol, gambling, overeating, the internet or drugs.
First established in 2002 at Sydney’s St Vincent Hospital to provide the community with a support group for those struggling with addictions, the organisation has broadened its reach through partnering with other groups like The Salvation Army, Youth off the Streets and Mission Australia.
Using the highly affective Cognitive Behavioural Therapy tools and techniques, SMART Recovery’s programs direct the focus on the ‘here and now’, ensuring attendees walk away with the skills and strategies to manage their urges or problems if and when they arise in the future.
SMART Recovery Australia currently runs four programs including Getting SMART, which is now in all NSW Correctional Facilities, BE SMART for families and carers, SMART Teen & Youth and Indigenous SMART Program operating successfully on the South East Coast.
As a not for profit organisation, SMART Recovery relies on the efforts of volunteers and donations are always appreciated.
