I would like to let you know about an opportunity to participate in a study that researchers from RMIT University (Melbourne) is conducting with SMART Recovery Australia.

A couple of things to keep in mind before I tell you a little bit about the study.

  • At this stage, I am just asking for expressions of interest – to know whether this is something you might be interested in.
  • Keep in mind that it is completely up to you whether you decide to get further information and then once you have got that information, whether you choose to participate.
  • This study is completely voluntary, anonymous and confidential, you can stop participating completing the survey at any stage. There are no incentives offered to participate in this survey.
  • If you do not choose to participate it will not affect your relationship with SMART Recovery, or any of the care you receive.

The study involves completing a short questionnaire (so that researchers can describe some of the key characteristics, experiences and behaviours of people who choose to participate). The questionnaire is expected to take approximately 20-25 minutes.

The purpose of the research is to better understand:

  • Why people choose different coping strategies when challenging events occur.
  • The benefits and challenges associated with implementing different coping strategies when challenging events occur.
  • Suggestions for improving access to, participation in and helpfulness of support groups.

The research team cannot promise any direct benefits. Your contribution is an important step in improving the treatment and support options that are available for people who experience difficulties with alcohol, substance and/ or other problematic behaviours of concern.
