Currently employed as the Executive Director of SMART Recovery Australia. Ryan commenced this role in November 2013.

Ryan has worked in the not-for-profit sector for over 25 years, including over 20 years in Executive roles. This has been primarily in the fields of mental health, suicide prevention, HIV/AIDS advocacy, Gay and Lesbian rights, social justice and the environment.

Ryan was the Chief Executive Officer for Suicide Prevention Australia for over eight years. In a previous role he was the Executive Officer of People Living with HIV / AIDS (NSW) Inc. (now Positive Life) for over 5 years. In both positions he was successful in significantly building the capacity and capability for the organisations.

He has been on numerous Boards and committees at international, national and state level. His current role also includes being the company secretary of SMART Recovery Australia. Ryan is an ex-officio Board member of SMART Recovery International; an organisation he played a key role in being established in 2018. Ryan is also a member of the Network of Alcohol and Other Drugs Agencies Board Advocacy sub-Committee

Ryan McGlaughlin has been awarded a Vice Admiral commendation for ‘bravery’, is a ‘Distinguished’ Life Member of PLWH/A (NSW), won the inaugural Leadership Recognition Life Award for Suicide Prevention Australia, and was Volunteer of the Year for the NSW Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby.

Ryan has completed a Master of Not-for-Profit and Social Enterprise Management and a post graduate Certificate in Community Management and Not-for-Profit Management at the University of Technology, Sydney.
